Clark Freeport Zone To Become Philippines’ First 5G Area

PLDT Inc will activate its first 5G cell site in the Clark Freeport Zone in November, making the former US military reservation the country’s first 5G area.

PLDT signed a memorandum of understanding for the venture with telecom infrastructure maker Ericsson and the Clark Development Authority, through its mobile arm, Smart.

In a press conference, PLDT and Smart chairman and CEO Manuel V. Pangilinan said that this will not only benefit Clark but also the country, by demonstrating that the Philippines is in step with the rest of the world in adopting advanced intelligent technologies.

According to Pangilinan, 5G is a major investment for PLDT, and they will ramp up their LTE rollout in Clark by equipping all of their satellites with 5G technology.

Clark Development Corp (CDC) President and CEO Noel Manankil said in a statement:

This, we believe, will not only be of benefit to Clark locators but also the many industries, various businesses, and communities in the country as well.

With a 221,000-kilometer fiber network, PLDT said it was “best positioned” to deploy 5G in the Philippines.
