PLDT Returns Frequency At No Cost
The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT)is finally set to for a third telco player as PLDT inc returns one of its frequencies.
In an interview, the officer-in-charge of DICT Eliseo Rio said:
“PLDT has fully complied with its divestment of 10 Mhz of the 3G radio frequency that was previously assigned with CURE. This frequency is now available to a new major telco player,”
In a Facebook post, Rio also uploaded a scanned copy of PLDT’s letter to the National Telecommunications Commission which was dated March 5, 2018 and beared the signature of PLDT’s President, Manny Pangilinan. The letter assured the government that PLDT is waiving its rights to seek compensation for returning the frequency. The frequency that was given up by PLDT was used by their mobile unit Smart in 2007 to launch the now defunct Red Mobile.
Duterte had been pushing for the entry of a third telco company to break the PLDT and Globe Telecom duopoly, and improve internet services in the country.
