Data Science then comes into play by utilizing various tools, algorithm, and machine learning principles to discover hidden patterns from these data and make machines understand human behaviors better.

To put it simply, it’s the reason why Facebook “predicted” that you might need a pair of yoga pants after you window shopped for a yoga matt in Lazada.  This information may not be that significant for the regular internet user to care, but businesses can turn those kinds of information into a gold mine.

And for starters, a degree in Computer Science, Social Sciences, Physical Sciences, or Statistics is the minimum required education.

Skills needed

What makes a data scientist different from statisticians is that they transcend beyond data analysis by building apps or creating programs that can benefit from certain set of data. That’s why, technical knowhow in the following areas is a must!

Their main responsibility is to ensure that the data or services requested by the front-end system or software are delivered through programmable means. Other than creating strings of action to provide appropriate responses to certain commands, they are also responsible for maintaining the entire back-end of a system, which consists of the core application logic, databases, data and application integration, API and other back-end processes.
